Swiss Alps rail + Hike | luzern, wengen & zermatt / 7 Nights
Discover the best of the Swiss Alps with this 7 day train and hiking tour of the Luzern, Berner Oberland and Matterhorn regions.

If you love big mountain scenery, then you’ll enjoy this week-long train tour of Switzerland with scenic hikes in the Luzern, Bernese Oberland and Matterhorn regions. This Swiss Alps rail + hike adventure begins in the picturesque 1300 year-old city of Luzern, nestled on the shores of Switzerland’s fourth largest lake, the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne). Visitors love the cobbled streets and historic guild halls of the medieval Altstadt (Old Town), and to ride a historic steam ship on the storied waters of Lake Lucerne is an absolute delight. Beautiful mountains surround Lake Lucerne, and you’ll have the opportunity to view secluded coves and colorful lakeside villages as you hike a scenic trail on the “Queen of the Swiss Alps,” Mount Rigi. Train lovers will enjoy the opportunity to ride the Rigibahn (Rigi Railway), the oldest cog railway in Europe.
After Luzern you’ll travel aboard the Luzern-Interlaken Panoramic Express to the car free village of Wengen in the Bernese Oberland, home to the world-famous famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. You’ll have time to hike beneath the stunning North Face of the Eiger, one of the six Great North Faces of the Alps. We’ll also give you a taste of village-to-village hiking across the Bernese Alps on one of our favorite trails to the dramatically perched cliffside village of Mürren.
From the Berner Oberland you’ll transfer to Zermatt in a region called the Valais. Zermatt is home to the Matterhorn, unquestionably the most iconic mountain in Switzerland. Drop your bags at our cozy inn in Zermatt, then zoom to the top of the Gornergrat for one of Zermatt’s most panoramic hikes offering outstanding views of the Matterhorn and the tallest mountains in the Swiss Alps. We’ll also give you directions for our favorite hikes away from the crowds with incredible views of the Matterhorn.
