You’ll visit three of the most beautiful destinations in Switzerland during this week-long train tour of the Swiss Alps with optional scenic hikes in Luzern, Ticino and the Engadine. This Swiss Alps rail + hike adventure begins in the picturesque 1300 year-old city of Luzern, nestled on the shores of Switzerland’s fourth largest lake, the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Luzern). Visitors love the architecture and vibrant life of the medieval Altstadt (Old Town), but it’s the lake itself which draws admirers from all over the world. Beautiful mountains surround Lake Luzern, and you’ll have the opportunity to view secluded coves and colorful lakeside villages from atop two of the most famous peaks that overlook Luzern, Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi. Train lovers will enjoy the Pilatusbahn (Pilatus Railway), the steepest rack railway in the world with a maximum gradient of 48 percent. Mount Rigi Railways, Europe’s first mountain railway (inaugurated in 1871), also runs a steam cogwheel train on select dates.
After Luzern, you’ll travel by lake steamer and panoramic train to the canton of Ticino where Italian is the official language. Relax beneath palm trees, eat delicious Italian-inspired cuisine, and hike (or sightsee) amidst remote mountain villages in the “Swiss Riviera.” Finally, you’ll enjoy a train journey to the Engadine valley in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland’s only officially tri-lingual canton where German, Italian and Romansh are commonly recognized and spoken. The influence of three different languages, along with a rich history of settlement by Celts, Romans, Italians, Austrians and Swiss, make Graubünden and the Engadine valley a joy to discover.
